Getting the best internet connection for online gaming gaming

When it comes to being able to play games online the quality of your broadband internet connection will be crucial to the quality of your gaming experience. Issues with low connection speeds and latency will seriously undermine the enjoyment of online gaming, and may even prevent you from participating at all. Thus you need to make sure that you have the best possible internet connection to facilitate this, and these are the three issues you need to concentrate on.

Location

This essentially means three different locations: yours, that of your internet provider, and that of the server hosting the game you are playing. The greater the distances between these three things, the worse the game playing experience is likely to be because latency increases over greater distances, and this will negatively impact your gaming.

Connection type

This means the type of wiring used for your internet connection, and there are three different types of wiring used: coaxial, copper and fibre optic. Copper is a common type of wiring used for internet connections, but provides the worst type of connection for online gaming, because it is generally used for DSL telephone-line connections. This means that internet connectivity is not the priority, and speeds tend to be low. Coaxial is the most common type of connection, usually used by cable providers, and provides better speeds; but fibre optic wiring is the best for online gaming, because it not only provides speedy connectivity, but also the lowest levels of latency.

Bandwidth

Some internet service providers impose fairly strict limits on the amount of bandwidth you are allowed to use, because they feel users are taking advantage of increasing broadband speeds, but this will be disastrous for regular online gamers – because these games generally require decent bandwidth. Thus you need to make sure that your service provider does not impose heavy limits on the gigabytes you can use per month, because there are providers offering unlimited usage during non-peak hours.
