A couple of days ago hackers leaked 6.5 million LinkedIn user passwords online, which fortunately where hashed and did not come with any email addresses, but that was something we didn’t know up to now, as LinkedIn’s Director, Vicente Silvera told users earlier today:

“To the best of our knowledge, no email logins associated with the passwords have been published”

This is great news, but LinkedIn are still contacting any of the affected users to change their password with a stronger replacement, containing a miz of letters, numbers and various other characters, which will stop anyone getting into your account if the emails do find their way into the wrong hands.

But if Silvera is right there should be no need to worry.

If you are bored with the same old Apple App Store, Facebook is bringing a new solution to you with their very own App Store, placed within the Facebook app, the new store will allow you to buy stuff like credits for games, through credit on your phone.

So far the service is only supported in the US and UK, with the carriers AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, O2, Orange, Three and Vodafone, but it’s safe to assume this service will appear in a few more countries at a later date.

Before we had no clue as to when the app will be released, but according to TechCrunch some Facebook users are already noticing a new “App Center” tab showing up in the navigation menu within the Facebook app. which TechCrunch say is:

Similar to the interfaces that the company showed off in early May when it announced the App Center plans, you can see a left-hand navigation feature within Facebook’s feature-heavy iOS app. Apps with unread notifications appear in the top section. If you click through, you see the App Center (and you’ll note that the logo in the screenshot also matches what Facebook has previously released).

Have you ever wondered what Facebook works on in their spare time? Well its great things like what they released today which allows you to use anyone’s profile picture as an Emotion, no longer will you have to use the boring smiley faces.

If you wanna try it, first you need to visit any profile, page or event that you want to use the profile picture for, after which you need to copy the profile ID at the end of the URL, for example if you where looking at our page: http://facebook.com/TechNuty you will copy “TechNutty”.

After you’ve copied that paste it into a chat window with bracelets wrapped around it, like [[TechNutty]]. You can send these emotions from both a phone and the web, but if you will only see then when your on the web, alongside this you can’t use them in status updates, wall posts, or comments as of yet.

Check out these suggested profiles which we found on TechCrunch which you could use for your emotions in the future:

If you have used Facebook on your computer lately you may have noticed that they recently updated the service bringing many different features, the main one being Facebook’s new timeline which has taken over the wall, since they have done this Facebook has today updated their current iOS app to bring these same features to an iPhone near you.

The main feature of the new update is again the Facebook timeline addition, which allows you to show off your very own cover photo alongside re-organising your statuses in a very different way, more like well a timeline. Alongside this Facebook also says the app is a lot faster and reliable as well as making the viewing of photos a lot easier.

What do you think of Facebook’s new app? Do you like the new timeline’s? And is the app actually quicker?

Facebook is due to fix 3 cookie issues within the next 24 hours following revelations yesterday that users were being tracked by the site even when logging out. In reaction to this and other recent privacy issues Facebook has urged its users to continue to trust the company while it works hard to fix this new issue.

The social networking Goliath first came under fire yesterday following the wide reporting of a blogpost by security consultant Nik Cubrilovic who demonstrated how Facebook continues to monitor its users even when they are logged out of the service. In the blogpost Mr Cubrilovic expressed clear concern at this latest privacy problem stating that:

“Even if you are logged out, Facebook still knows and can track every page you visit,” “The only solution is to delete every Facebook cookie in your browser, or to use a separate browser for Facebook interactions.”

Quickly reacting to the story Facebook contacted Cubrilovic who had a 40 minute conversation about the issue with senior engineers at the company, they promised to fix the issue within the next 24 hours.

Discussing the lengthy conversation he had with Facebook in The Australian, Cubrilovic revealed that:

“They aim to fix it (the logout issue) by tomorrow,”

“There will still be cookies, but they won’t be identifiable. That’s within 24 hours.” He then tellingly added:

“We can only take them at their word.”

In other Facebook news, social media blog Mashable has revealed that they expect Facebook to demonstrate a dedicated iPad application at the next Apple Event which is due to take place on the 4th October where Apple is widely expected to reveal the new iPhone 5.

The move to announce the launch of this app at the event is interesting in light of Apple already stating that Twitter will be integrated natively into their new mobile operating system iOS 5; it is believed that the once frosty relationship between Apple and Facebook is beginning to melt as they both now share the crucial goal of beating Google.

Google + has been out their for a while now, (still not open to the public though) and has so far become extremely popular, with a very high demand which is probably going to get better with Google’s introduction of games, Vic Gundotra, Google’s Senior Vice President of Engineering wrote:

“With the Google+ project, we want to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to the web. But sharing is about more than just conversations.

“The experiences we have together are just as important to our relationships. We want to make playing games online just as fun, and just as meaningful, as playing in real life.

“That means giving you control over when you see games, how you play them and with whom you share your experiences. Games in Google+ are there when you want them and gone when you don’t.”

As with the account system games will not be available for everyone yet, but should be rolled out the the whole Google circle soon, at the moment Google have only secured 16 titles so not much compition there, but some of the games are some pretty big names such as Angry Birds, Bejewled, Bliz, Bubble Island, Zaynga Poker and Diamond Dash.

Introducing games is most defiently the right way to go for Google+ with hundreads if not millions of users logging into Facebook just to play the games, with most of this being employees in an office Google might have the upper hand with the mix of CIrcles, Hangouts and this great selection of games, this would appeal quite highly to the business types.

What do you think? Have you got games on your Google+ yet? What other games do you think they will release?

Drop us a line or two in the comments below.

The new Messenger will allow users to contact both Facebook friends and phone contacts with the recipient receiving notifications and texts to inform them of your message, from which Facebook thinks their service will allow your freinds to see messages much sooner than rival apps, in Facebook’s blog one of the engineer’s Lucy Zhang wrote:

“It isn’t always easy to know the best way to reach someone on their phone.

“Should you send an email or text? Which will they check first? Did they even get your last message?

“We think messaging should be easier than that. You should be able to write a message, click “Send” and know that you will reach the person right away.

“So today, we’re introducing Messenger, a new mobile app that simplifies how messaging works, and gives you a faster way to message friends and small groups.”

Facebook also added this about the service:

“When you’re on the go, coordinating a bunch of people can be tricky, especially if plans change at the last minute. With Messenger, you can quickly start a group conversation and message everyone at once.

“If you choose to add your location, the people you’re messaging with can easily find each other on the map. You can also attach photos, so everyone else can see and comment on what you’re looking at.”

What do you think? An instant winner? Have you tried it out yet?

Last week we wrote a post about Facebook adding a new service, from which they said would be ‘something awesome’ which we already had heard Facebook will be releasing a Video calling feature into their social network. Today Mark Zuckerberg and his Facebook team will be releasing a video calling and updated feature to the social network.

Today Zuckerberg and Skype’s CEO Tony Bates, discussed the two teams working together in the near future, to bring Facebook users a new service which will enable them to start video calls between their Facebook friends, for which their friend’s don’t even need the software installed to accept the call.

The best part of this new service is that the download is extremely small, only taking around 30 seconds to download the software on a normal broadband connection. Another cool part of the new feature is that the notifications are unobtrusive and will allow you to take the call without quitting whatever you are doing. No current integration with mobile phones, so no video calling on your tablet just yet.

Will this service does seem cool, I’m not too sure it is ‘awesome’, but Facebook’s group chat feature is getting a overhall to make it more ‘user-friendly’ and they are adding a new button, which allows the user to add friends to an existing chat so they can pull any new friends to a current chat as soon as the come online.

The service is launching today and should be accessible as you log-on to Facebook. Watch the video below explaining the new service:

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xr47IIKOxU8

Will you use Facebook’s new video call feature? Is this better than using Skype by itself? Would you still use Skype by itself?

Yesterday Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, stated publicly that this Wednesday he will be releasing ‘something awesome’, since then a lot of people have wondered what this awesome thing will be, as Mark did not say anymore than that.

Apparently according to sources at TechnoBuffalo this awesome feature will actually be an integrated Skype powered video chat, allowing the user to video chat with their Facebook friends, straight from the page.

This feature would make perfect sense for so many different reasons, the first of which is it would defiantly be something awesome, and another reason is the simple fact that Microsoft will soon own Skype from which they also have their own shares in Facebook, so it would make perfect sense for them to integrate their new feature with Facebook, as it would mean they could bring in a lot more money from the both of them than if they where alone.

What do you think about this? Would you video chat through Facebook? Or is this not the ‘something awesome’ we are looking for?

A huge 6 billion photos are uploaded to Facebook every month and if Facebook do launch this photo application it is sure to be an instant contender to all other photo apps on a mix of Andriod Marketplace and Apple App Store.

Worldwide Facebooks user numbers are nearing 700 million, but according to Inside Facebook the company who track the sites popularity states both Brits and North Americans have been canceling their accounts.

Facebooks main aim is to attract a billion users from which it currently has around 687 million, but has reportedly lost a pretty hard hitting 100,000 British users just in May, US users numbers also dropped from 155.2 to 149.4 million users.

Commentators have suggested this is because both Britons and Americans who has closed their accounts are suffering ‘Facebook fatigue’ and basically getting bored of the service, but this could also be because of the recent early Face Detection roll out that users wasn’t to pleased with to say the least.

But its not just Briton and American that have closed accounts, in Canada alone there was a recent drop of around 1.5 million, with numbers decreasing in Russia and Norway to.

Facebook released a statement about this and can be read below:

“From time to time, we see stories about Facebook losing users in some regions.

“Some of these reports use data extracted from our advertising tool, which provides broad estimates on the reach of Facebook ads and isn’t designed to be a source for tracking the overall growth of Facebook.

“We are very pleased with our growth and with the way people are engaged with Facebook.

“More than 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day.”

Are you getting bored of Facebook? Are you one of the people who closed their account? Or are you thinking about it?

Facebook has recently apologised over the way it rolled out its newest feature that recognises users faces, Facebook said it should have done more to notify its members before their global launch of the service.

The feature basically scans photos and automatically tags the users friends according to their photos, although users do have the option to turn it off, some complained they were not even asked if they wanted it in the first place.

Facebook stated the system was only intended to speed up the user’s process of tagging a photo and was first introduced in the US in December 2010 and has now been launched globally. Graham Cluey, senior consultant with security firm Sophos quoted:

“Once again Facebook seems to be sharing personal information by default,” said Mr Cluley.
“Many people feel distinctly uncomfortable about a site like Facebook learning what they look like and using that information without their permission.”

If you’re worried about this and wish to turn the feature off, here’s how to do it.
BBC Webwise Facebook’s face recognition technology (and how to turn it off)”

As your Facebook friends upload their albums, Facebook will try to determine if any of the pictures look like you. And if they find what they believe to be a match, they may well urge one of your Facebook friends to tag it with your name,” he explained in his blog.

“The tagging is still done by your friends, not by Facebook. But rather creepily Facebook is now pushing your friends to go ahead and tag you.”

Defending the technology, a Facebook spokesperson told the BBC that there had been “misconceptions” about what it does but apologised for not properly informing users.

“Tag Suggestions are only made to people when they add new photos to the site, and only friends are suggested.”If for any reason someone doesn’t want their name to be suggested, they can disable the feature in their privacy settings.”We should have been more clear with people during the roll-out process when this became available to them,” said the spokesperson.

What do you think about this? Do you like this feature? Would you use it?

Today Facebook has enabled a new feature to a test group called ‘happening now’, which is from what I can tell a side bar which delivers real-time updates on your Facebook friends recent activities, from which will show what their friends are sharing, commenting, liking, friending and all round facebooking.

But i thought News Feed already shown us this? the answer is both yes and no, Happening Now will be more of a shortcut from which the user can use as a quick-glance list that will summarise all current activities in an easy to view spot.

The sidebar is situated at the far right. (Click to enlarge.)

Obviously some of the information will be a little useless if it is on both news feed and Happening Now so hopefully their will be filters or some sort of already read thingy. But it may not even happen as from the picture above i can see it is covering where the advertisers space so you may even have to pay, who knows?

How would you use Happening Now? What do you think the advertisers will do? Would you ever pay for Facebook?
