This week Amazon launched a brand new reading app called Amazon Rapids, which they are launching today to provide kids with a reading experience that combines humour with text messages.

In this app, Rapid stories will unfold as dialogue between two characters, who will be represented as avatars in a set of text messages within a conversation. There will be no exposition in these stories and no paragraphs.

Each of these stories will last for between five and ten minutes and will combine these text message conversations with  art, colorful backgrounds and more.

It’s not really aimed at teaching kids about how to read, but is more about getting them to look forward to reading, which can be a difficult thing to do with a normal book.

But it does come at a cost, which has been set at a $2.99 a month subscription.
