Do you still have an old iPod Nano lying in a draw somewhere, well according to Apple it could be in danger of overheating causing certain health and safety issues. If you have used your 1st Gen Nano a lot before you may have noticed this, to fix the problem Apple issued a statement yesterday indicating the 1st Gen iPod Nano could overheat, and encouraging owners to request a replacement, free of charge.

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

This issue will only affect the original iPod Nano which had been sold between September 2005, and December 2006. If you’re not sure about which iPod Nano the 1st gen is exactly it is the one pictured above and is available with a white or black plastic front and a silver back.

If you have the iPod Nano in question, you can check on Apple’s support page by typing in your Nano’s serial number and filing a claim, if your iPod does then need replacing Apple will continue by first sending you a package to send your iPod Nano to them, and will finally receive your new iPod Nano within six weeks of your claim.

Do you still have the 1st Gen iPod Nano? Have you claimed yet? What do you think about this?
