Upon looking at the official page for the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3 we found a reference to something which Apple didn’t mention during today’s event. Called the Apple SIM it is a SIM card that will come pre-installed in both the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3, allowing for short term plans from day one of having either of the tablets.

Here’s Apple’s description of the new feature:

“The new Apple SIM is preinstalled on iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models. The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.”

It does however seem that this SIM card will not be replaceable, and the user will only be able to select from one of the participating networks.

From the page we can see that this includes AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in the US and EE in the UK, however details are lacking about the card at the moment.
