Shortly after announcing that BBM Voice and BBM channels to the BBM for Android and iOS app next year, BlackBerry announced that BBM for iOS and Android is now being used by over 40 million users, all of which were registered within the last 60 days, as revealed during the BlackBerry Earnings Report this morning:

Messaging: Over 40 million newly registered iOS/Android users in the last 60 days; more than a dozen Android OEMs to preload BBM, including most recently LG; over 250,000 BBM Channels created by global user base since launch of BBM Channels on BlackBerry, including large brands such as Coke Indonesia and USA Today; BBM is the most secure mobile messaging service for use in regulated enterprises

However the company did not reveal the split between the too, and they did not reveal how many of those users are still activity registered.

It would have been interesting to have compared the user list with that of WhatsApp’s recent announcement of 400 million active users.
