BSkyB recently took Microsoft to court due to SkyDrive infringing on BSkyB’s trademarks for the Sky name in the UK and the EU.

And it seems that the court is thinking along the same lines, ruling that SkyDrive does indeed infringe on BSkyB’s trademarks, with the judge stating the use of the “sky” prefix wasn’t necessary, showing evidence that some of the general public didn’t understand which company made what.

Microsoft have said that they have plans to appeal the verdict, however if the appeal falls through there’s still no guarantee that Microsoft will have to change the name of the cloud service, and might instead have to pay some fines.

We should find out more after the appeal case has been completed.
