BT has today announced that they are finally going to catch up to Sky Q and Virgin Media with the announcement of 4K Ultra HD support for YouView.

The update will come as part of BT’s new and improved YouView TV service.

It will automatically be rolled out to cutomers’ set-top boxes in the early part of 2017 and will include what BT claims to be a faster and slicker TV experience, with support for not only Ultra HD, but also support for Dolby’s Atmos technology.

You will get this support when you have the YouView box with a compatible AV reciever, with either in-ceiling speakers or upward-firing height channel speakers.

The update will also come alongside the launch of a new BT TV app, which will allow you to stream live TV and on-demand programmes on your mobile device, as well as manage your YouView recordings.

They will also be adding a number of new sports programming to the service.

Delia Bushell, managing director of BT TV and BT Sport explained the update with the following:

“BT’s mission has always been to provide a high quality, premium TV service at prices that give unbeatable value to UK consumers. We will keep driving the pace of innovation in content, broadcasting and our customers’ experience”.

“In 2017 we’re going to further shake up the market by releasing our new viewing experience across our TV guide and on demand, our new TV app and on our BT Sport channels, provided as a free upgrade for our customers.”
