If you haven’t already gotten the memo, mobile is kind of a big deal—and even bigger business. With tens of millions of devices in the market, it’s no wonder that more companies are looking toward the app stores to get a piece of the pie. There’s a lot of money waiting to be made with such a large market, and you could rake in big bucks if you can create an even moderately successful app.

Apple has sold nearly 200 million iPhones since the iPhone 6’s release, and Samsung has sold a whopping 10 million units of its new Galaxy S7 in March alone. Those numbers are only going up, and the audience can be expected to increase as the year rolls along. The revenue of traditional app-based games is expected to reach $45 billion by 2018 while the value of the amount of bets placed through mobile devices
is predicted to hit $100 billion by the same year. That’s a serious chunk of change. In a console market that’s still trying to find its proper place in this world of mobile gaming, it should come as no surprise that companies that once cut their teeth on consoles are looking to mobile to right the ship.

Perhaps the biggest among these is Nintendo, who just recently revealed its first official app, Miitomo, which immediately catapulted itself to the top of the free charts for both iOS and Android platforms. The app is more of a social platform as opposed to an actual game. Also, the free-to-play app supports micro-transactions, suggesting that players might plunk down some coin for a new Mario cap and other items. And Miitomo is merely the first of many Nintendo apps to come with the augmented reality game, Pokemon Go, set for release later in 2016. The company, along with developer DeNA, has announced that it plans to have a total of five games on the market by March 2017.

However, Nintendo isn’t the only one of the old guard looking to cash in on the continuously growing mobile gaming market. Capcom will also redouble its efforts in mobile gaming with four new titles planned for release in 2017 that will draw from the company’s existing popular franchises, including Sengoku Basara, Monster Hunter, and, of course, Mega Man.

And now there are reports that, not to be one to miss out on an opportunity, Sony will enter the mobile fray. The Japanese tech giant will first be focusing its efforts on Japan and the Asian mobile market with plans to expand later on. The PlayStation 4, Sony’s latest console, has been performing well with 36 million units being sold worldwide since its 2013 launch. This far outpaces the lagging sales of the Wii U and even the Xbox One.

With so many console companies looking toward making the most of the mobile marketplace, this is a trend we expect to continue with even more games and publishers set to join the fun by next year. It’s far too early to tell what kind of impact these moves will have on the state of consoles, but the real winner will be mobile gamers. They can expect a much wider variety of games from long-established corporations that are finally willing to allow fans to play with their most-beloved franchises on the go.
