Corning has today the next generation of their Gorilla Glass technology.

Called Gorilla Glass 5, the new generation has been designed to protect the next generation of smartphones further than what previous generations have done.

Corning has said that Gorilla Glass 5 will survive drops onto rough surfaces four times better than the competitor products out there, whilst keeping the clarity and touch sensitivity of the display.

They also say that the 5th generation can survive a facedown drop from 5.2 feet onto a rough surface 80 percent of the time, which is a huge improvement from Gorilla Glass 4’s 3.2 feet drop rate.

Corning has explained more about it with the following:

“With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass. “With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement.”

Gorilla Glass 5 is already available to manufacturers around the globe and Corning says that it will start appearing in consumer devices later this year, however, they have not announced specific partnerships.
