It’s Official, Cortana will indeed be the name for the personal assistant for Windows Phone, well its the codename for it anyway.

Revealed by The Verge, the assistant has been named after the artificial intelligence character from the Halo games series, and is Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s Siri assistant.

According to the sources that are speaking to The Verge, the assistant may not launch with the name Cortana, but it is the name whilst it is in production.

Cortana appears as a circular animated icon when speaking or thinking, and will use services like Bing and Foursquare to gather information for the user, and will even be able to store user’s data in its Notebook to help make future searches more accurate, even using this data to speak to the user by their name or nickname.

Cortana is expected to be unveiled by Microsoft at their upcoming BUILD conference in April, where they are said to also unveil Windows Phone 8.1.
