Facebook has today launched their own virtual assistant, called M it is an artificial intelligence that is accessible through Messenger and is able to answer questions and complete various tasks.

An example of what you can do with it is to ask it advice on where to go around you. It’s pretty much the same as Siri, Cortana or Google Now, but within a separate application and that exists only in text chat.

Facebook has also noted that it has humans training and supervising the AI behind the scenes to make it more accurate.

Today we’re beginning to test a new service called M. M is a personal digital assistant inside of Messenger that completes tasks and finds information on your behalf. It’s powered by artificial intelligence that’s trained and supervised by people.

Unlike other AI-based services in the market, M can actually complete tasks on your behalf. It can purchase items, get gifts delivered to your loved ones, book restaurants, travel arrangements, appointments and way more.

This is early in the journey to build M into an at-scale service. But it’s an exciting step towards enabling people on Messenger to get things done across a variety of things, so they can get more time to focus on what’s important in their lives. – David Marcus (Facebook)

As of yet it’s only available to a few hundred people in the San Francisco Area so it won’t be that useful to most just yet, given that it will only be able to provide recommendations for that location, but it is likely that it will expand to other regions soon.
