A long, long time ago Google lost a trademark dispute in Germany, disallowing them from using the Gmail branding in Germany, with users having to use googlemail.com e-mail address, but thankfully for Germans this dispute has now been resolved and Google has now changed the name of its Google Mail to Gmail and has given everyone residing in Germany the opportunity to switch there @googlemail.com addresses for shiny new @gmail.com ones, but that is not compulsory and all previous address will still function.
