During their Google I/O 2015 conference Google today announced that their Google Maps service will soon be getting new features for the offline mode of Google Maps.

This new Offline Maps version will come with an offline search function and offline turn by turn navigation, both of which used to require a WiFi or cellular connection.

Now they don’t need any of these, however you do need to have GPS switched on in order to get them to work.

Offline Mode will also show data for places near to you in the update, allowing users to see the restaurants and places of interest near them.

Google has said that these new features will be added to Google Maps in a software update later this year.

As soon as we hear more we will let you know.
