One of the biggest events of the calendar year will kick off very soon, called IFA, it is commonly the event that we see a number of mobile announcements from and this year shouldn’t be any different.

To break it down for you, we have rounded up this year’s IFA event in this article to provide you with the details on what IFA is, when it is, and what you should be expecting from it.

Check it out below.

What is it? When is it? And how can I get in?

IFA  is an annual event that takes place in Berlin, Germany and is the place to learn about the newest devices and the latest innovations from the tech companies around the world.

It first opened its doors back in 1924 and rang up until 1939, postponing the event due to the events of WWII and later picking it back up in 1950.

It has been running for all of that time under the banner ‘Internationale Funkausstellung’ which is German for the ‘International Radio Exhibition’.

The event regularly attracts a number of exhibitors and attendees, in fact, back in 2013, IFA became the largest consumer electronics fair in the world with 273,800 visitors and more than 1,000 exhibitors

This year IFA 2017 will kick off on September 1st and will run until September 6th at the Berlin ExpoCenter.

You will be able to pick up a one-day ticket to the show from IFA’s website now.

What can you expect from this year’s show

We expect that this year’s IFA 2017 event will follow on from the event’s of last year’s show, but with some new and possibly even better announcements.

We have already had a number of exhibitors confirm their attendance and we expect to see a whole range of products from these exhibitors from wireless connected speakers and headphones to AR and VR devices to AI voice controlled assistants to the latest smart technology and smartphones.

Here’s a breakdown of what we expect from each manufacturer:

Last year Asus hosted an event where they revealed some new Zen-branded devices including a new smartwatch and smartphone, so this year we might expect to see some new devices from the company, including some possibly interesting ones.

HTC has already been busy this year with a number of smartphone unveilings, so we are unsure if they will have much left for the event, however, we could see some new mid-range and low-end smartphones.

HTC did tease that they will be launching a new standalone Vive virtual reality headset in China. They didn’t reveal anything about a release in other regions, however, it is possible that they may reveal some new details about its launch and features during IFA.

We may also see Google Daydream or other virtual reality gear at the show as HTC expand into the arena.

We have only just seen Huawei unveil the P10, so we don’t expect to see a new flagship from the company at this year’s IFA, however, it’s possible that we may see smaller devices or possibly other connected devices.

We have heard rumours that they may unveil their new Mate 10 phablet during their press event at IFA 2018, and we may also see a new version of their mid-range Nova smartphone. On top of that, we may also see some new MediaPad tablets and an update to the Huawei Watch line.

We expect that LG might reveal some new monitors during IFA 2017 and possibly some new TVs alongside them.

One thing that we have heard a lot about so far is the LG V30, which is expected to be LG’s latest smartphone and the follow up to the V20. Last year they unveiled the V20 during a separate event, however, it’s possible that we might see if during this year’s IFA instead.

Motorola/ Lenovo

We could see some new laptops, tablets, and phones from Lenovo and Motorola during IFA 2017, just as we did during IFA 2016.

[Update April 27th: The Moto E4 and Moto E4 Plus  have been leaked, which are two devices that may be revealed at IFA 2017.]

Philips has already confirmed that they will be attending IFA 2017, but aside from confirming that they will be launching a new connected toothbrush at the show but they didn’t reveal anything more than that.

We do expect to see some domestic appliances as well as updates to their audio products and their TVs.

We might even see some new Philips Hue stuff.

Samsung regularly attends IFA 2017 to reveal some of the products that they didn’t reveal earlier on in the year.

This year we don’t really know what Samsung has left to unveil, however, there are rumours that we will see some new foldable prototypes at the show, including a foldable smartphone that has reportedly been codenamed the Galaxy X.

However, we haven’t heard much about the Galaxy X just yet.

Samsung did previously launch their latest Note smartphone model at IFA, however, in 2016 they moved this reveal to a separate event.

It’s possible that they might do the same this year, or return to IFA, so you might also expect some Note news.

Executive Director of IFA, Jens Heithecker said that “Samsung will have the biggest presentation” at IFA 2017 to Korea Times, which could possibly hint at the announcement of a brand new Note device, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.

We have already heard a lot about this Note 8, however, instead of rambling about all of that, we are just going to direct you to our Note 8 roundup page here, that said, Samsung did confirm that they will be releasing a new flagship by the end of 2017, which will possibly be the Note 8, it could still be possible that it might be released at a separate event.

On top of that, we have heard that Samsung may unveil a tablet during IFA 2017, however, the latest Tab Book was recently released so you shouldn’t expect this tablet to be anything too flagship. We have also heard that the Gear 4 smartwatch might be released during the show and it is possible that we might see some other announcements from some of Samsung’s other ventures during the show, including some new Internet of Things devices for their SmartThings platform and possibly some TVs and TV gear.

Sony regularly has some stuff to show off at IFA.

We don’t know much about what they will unveil during IFA 2017, however, we expect to see a range of new products from the show with some new TVs, possibly some new phones and maybe even a tablet or two.

Sony could possibly reveal a follow-up to their Z4 tablet this year, alongside the Xperia XZ1, the XZ1 Compact, and the Z1 smartphone.

We have heard that the Xperia X2 might be the focus of the show.

We haven’t seen many new devices from TomTom this year, so it is quite possible that we may see some new stuff from the company in 2017.

It’s possible that this might include some new GPS devices and maybe some wearables.

Of course, we will be sure to update you as we hear more from IFA 2017, so be sure to keep it locked to our homepage to get those updates.
