Apple released a new version of the iOS 11 beta this week and it brought one huge feature, the ability to quickly disable the Touch ID function on your phone with an easy to access shortcut.

With this feature, users will be able to lock down their iPhone for situations when they don’t want Touch ID enabled, such as when crossing a border or when approached by the police. The reason that you might want to do this is that it might not be as secure as a passcode.

You might fall asleep next to your iPhone and someone might use your hand to unlock it, or you might even be forced by enforcement to unlock your phone physically, with a passcode, there’s no way that either can happen.

Previously, you would have to turn your iPhone off and then on again, however, with iOS 11, you will be able to do it with a quick shortcut.

Here’s how:

  • Press the Sleep/Wake button five times in succession.

And that’s it, you’ll now have to enter a passcode to unlock your phone.

Pretty easy right? Also just to mention, that’s also how you quickly access the emergency SOS feature and your Medical ID.
