LG has this week announced a new product to make your home and your appliances smarter, called the SmartThinQ, it is a sensor that can be attached to a number of traditional home appliances in order to make them “smart-aware”.

“Adoption of smart home appliances has been slow because of the perception that the technology is not easily accessible,” said Jo Seong-jin, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company. “LG is committed to continuing its leadership in the smart home market with innovations such as LG SmartThingQ, which provides real-life benefits and offers new lifestyle conveniences through technology that is easy to use.”

In terms of design, the SmartThinQ is a circular device that can be placed on top of something like a washing machine or refrigerators and then sense things like vibration and temperature.

It can then communicate those readings to the SmartThinQ app on the user’s smartphone, you can then use this to know when a laundry cycle is complete, or know when a particular food item is about to expire for example.

The sensor can also track how many times the door has been opened, or can be attached to something like an air conditioner or another appliance and then controlled remotely through the SmartThinQ app.

As of yet we don’t know much more about SmartThinQ than that, but if we do find out more we will let you know.
