Meerkat lost the live streaming app battle to Periscope some time ago, however, they did not give up on developing apps.

In fact, today Meerkat launched a group video chat application, called Houseparty, it was originally built under the pseudonym Alexander Herzick in order to hide the fact that Meerkat was changing courses, but as of today, they no longer need that pseudonym.

And despite only being available for a short time now, the app has already been downloaded a bunch of times, with a total of around 1 million users already.

It works in a similar way to other chat applications, you can invite friends to a chat over SMS and then video call those friends who have aldo download the Houseparty application.

They want this to take over from group chat or Skype, allowing you to create live video chats right from your smartphone.

Take a look at the video below for a quick look.

You can download it from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store today for free.
