Today Nintendo quietly announced a new piece of hardware called the Nintendo 2DS XL, which is a new portable gaming solution that features the classic clamshell design and comes with the ability to play both DS and 3DS games, without the 3D capabilities.

But don’t confuse it for the original 2DS, it doesn’t feature that design that a lot people didn’t like and it has a number of new features.

It will come with the same screen size as the Nintendo 3DS XL, yet it is lighter than that system while packing the power of the Nintendo 3DS XL and featuring NFC connectivity for Amibo games.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said the following about it in the following statement:

“This new addition to Nintendo’s portable hardware line demonstrates our commitment to the hand-held market, new Nintendo 2DS XL sports a beautiful clamshell design and offers a great balance between price and performance.”

It will launch in the US for $150 on July 28th. It will be available in black/turquoise in US and according to some reports, it will be white/orange in Japan.
