As has been rumoured for some time, Samsung has today announced the Gear VR headset during their Unpacked 2014 event during IFA 2014.

This new device is powered by the Oculus Rift, but designed more for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which can slot right into the headset and the allow the user to view content from their mobile in full 360 degree virtual reality.

This is the start of Facebook’s plan to commercialise the Oculus Rift, meaning that Samsung has been allowed to design the headset to their own looks, with a white and black plastic design.

The Gear VR also has a new feature that means the Gear VR can process content at 20ms in order to reduce latency.

Gear VR also has Super AMOLED, with a 96 degree viewing angle, all without any of the usual cables that the Oculus Rift normally needs in order to work.
