This week Seagate revealed the launch of a new range of hard drives, called the BarraCudas.

These new hard drives come in a 2.5-inch form factor, with a massive 5TB storage capacity. These new drives use some of Seagate’s latest technology, allowing it to take advantage of a 5,400RPM spindle speed, with multi-tier caching.

This new BarraCuda ST5000LM000 is also the highest capacity 2.5-inch hard drive that is currently available, which Seagate managed with new shingled recording tech.

This technology allows the drive to increase storage density by overwriting previously written magnetic tracks.

Normally this would slow down write speeds, but Seagate has solved this by organising shingles into tracks on the hard disk, keeping the amount of overwriting to a minimum.

Currently, this new Barracuda is only available for desktops and for external storage devices.
