Sony has this week announced that its PlayStation 4 is already getting off to a good start, selling 1 million units in the first 24 hours of its availability on Friday, the console is already the fastest selling PlayStation console to date, beating the record that was set by the PlayStation 2 when it launched in Japan.

This becomes an especially huge number when  you consider that the console was only available in the United States and Canada at launch, with a global rollout coming on November 29th.

Our best guess for this sales record is likely due to the worldwide excitement for the next-generation of consoles, with gaming bigger than it has ever been, a lot of consumers are looking for something new.

“PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal, sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29.” Said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment.
