For some time now you have only been able to control your Spotify music with a home assistant if you subscribed to their Premium tier, leaving a lot of people wondering if that’s something that they actually want to do instead of simply using a Bluetooth speaker.

But from today you won’t have to make that choice if you have a Google Home device.

That’s because Spotify has now rolled out the capability to control music playback from Spotify even if you are on their free plan in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, France or Germany.

To use it, you simply need to go to the Google Home app, set Spotify as the default music service and sign in.

Once you have done that you will be able to use commands like “Ok Google, play Spotify”, to “Ok Google, play my chill playlist” to get Google Home to play some tunes.

You can also play a specific song from Google Home, remove them, and even ask Google what song you are currently playing if you don’t know.

If that takes your fancy then you should update your Spotify app to the last version today to get started.
