Spotify has today revealed that it now has 40 million active monthly users on its music streaming platform, out of which 10 million of those users are currently paying for one of Spotify’s subscription packages.

This comes after the service first launched back in 2008, and quickly become one of the most used music streaming services around the world thanks to its advert model, which allows users to stream music for free, with only a few ads to get in their way.

The service has since expanded, now offering advert-free unlimited streaming packages for its paid subscribers.

“We’ve had an amazing year, growing from 20 markets to 56 as people from around the world embrace streaming music. 10 million subscribers is an important milestone for both Spotify and the entire music industry,” said Daniel Ek, CEO and founder, Spotify.

“We’re widening our lead in the digital music space and will continue to focus on getting everyone in the world to listen to more music.”

Spotify also revealed that the most streamed artist to date is Eminem, and that so far they have contributed over $1 billion to music rights holders.
