There’s not a lot of hard drives out there that are really reliable in the toughest of situations, so if you’re looking for one then it might be quite the ordeal to find the right one for you. One of your options for this could be Transcend’s Storejet 25M3 portable hard drive.
Sized at 129.5mm x 82.4mm x 20.4mm the 25M3 features military-grade shock resistance as according to the U.S. military drop standards MIL-STD-810F. This comes alongside a 3-stage shock protection system and an anti-shock rubber outer case and an advanced internal hard drive suspension system.
However the drive is not only secure on the outside which protects it from drops, dust and damage, but it is also secure inside with 256-bit AES file & folder encryption via the Transcend Elite software that is included with the drive.
That software also brings one more feature, and that is the addition of auto-backup and synchronisation features, allowing you to quickly backup your folders and files with one touch of a button.
That button is faced right on the front of the device that is easy to press and makes it even easier to keep your life backed up.
There is one problem with this button, and that is that around the button is a light that indicates that the drive is working, normally this wouldn’t be a problem, but due to the light’s size and brightness it can quickly become an annoyance.
Due to this I would advise that you should whack a sticker or something in front of it and that should make your nights a little less blinding.
In terms of speed the drive uses the USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 interfaces in order to achieve the best possible speed for your device, Transcend doesn’t give any numbers for the specifics of these speeds, however in own testing with the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test on a MacBook Pro Retina we found that the drive achieved read speeds of around 110MB/s and write speeds that where also around 110MB/s.
Now those speeds aren’t exactly spectacular so that’s definitely something you should consider before choosing the StoreJet 25M3, on top of that the drive itself is quite bulky and heavy, measuring 129.5mm x 82.4mm x 20.4mm and weighing between 216g and 230g depending on the drive you choose.
This means that this drive is not one that you are going to be able to pop in a pocket, and you will most certainly need a bag to carry it around, however if you want something that is rugged, I don’t think portability is really an option.
The drive does have some pretty decent storage space options, of which you can choose the version that you need specifically, between 500GB, 1TB and 2TB.
The 500GB is priced at around £45, the 1TB is priced at around £50 and the 2TB is around £90
You can find out more about the drive on Transcend’s website.
