Today Twitter made a huge move for those who want to increase the amount of storage on the phone and reduce the amount of data that they consume.

This is with the launch of Twitter Lite, which is a Progressive Web App (PWA) that runs in any mobile browser but can also be added to your homescreen for a data-saving version of Twitter that uses less than 1MB of storage space.

Twitter has also minimised the data usage of the app, with better resiliency on mobile networks, and offline compatibility.

You will also be able to pop into the settings to further reduce data usage by only downloading low-res previews of images and videos, which show blurred versions of images that can be tapped on to download the full image.

Elsewhere, everything else is pretty similar to the normal service, with access to direct messages, trends and profiles.

Twitter explained more about it with the following:

We have added a data saver mode, which further reduces the amount of mobile data used. In this mode, you will see a preview of images and videos before choosing which ones to fully load. This can reduce your data usage by up to 70%, making it more affordable for you to use Twitter in areas where mobile data is expensive.

You can run the web app today by visiting mobile.twitter.com in your web browser from anywhere in the world with support for 42 different languages.
