Today the NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson and Shane Kimbrough will be completing a spacewalk on the outside of the International Space Station (ISS) to upgrade the station’s power systems.

During the spacewalk, the astronauts will be swapping out the old nickel-hydrogen batteries with new and more efficient lithium-ion batteries.

It will be Kimbrough’s third spacewalk and Whitson’s seventh. But despite that, the pair have already been doing a lot of prep for the task,

They will be replacing one pair of the old nickel-hydrogen batteries that are situated near the ISS’ solar panels with a single lithium-ion battery and a plate, with a data-link cable that will connect each adapter plate to each battery pair.
