Back when WhatsApp was originally created in 2009, the app wasn’t extremely popular and the developers didn’t quite know what the app would become.

Today users share all sorts of media from images all the way up to voice messages through the service, however, before the app was a basic text only messenger and as such so where its statuses.

On their blog today they announced the launch of a new version of the WhatsApp app to bring a new version of WhatsApp Status, which changes the status feature with the addition of not only text statuses, but also image and video statuses.

And the updates will even be end-to-end encrypted.

Here’s how they explained the new feature:

We are excited to announce that, coinciding with WhatsApp’s 8th birthday on February 24, we are reinventing the status feature. Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.

Just like eight years ago when we first started WhatsApp, this new and improved status feature will let you keep your friends who use WhatsApp easily updated in a fun and simple way. From all of us at WhatsApp, we hope you enjoy it!

The new feature should be rolled out to all WhatsApp users over the next week or so, so be sure to keep a look out for it on your phone’s app updates screen.
