Microsoft firs announced the release of the Windows 8.1 upgrade earlier this year, since which not much has happened, however it looks as though the OS may be released publicly in October.

According to sources cited by ZDNet, the RTM build will hit manufacturers by the end of August and then publicly released in mid-October.

However some users can get their hands on the software before then via MSDN or TechNet, however there are claims that the final version of 8.1 in those means won’t be available globally.
