During their conference at gamescom, Microsoft announced a number of new things for the Xbox, one of which is a new update for the Xbox One that will bring a number of new features to the console.

To be distributed to users of the Xbox One Early Access program later this app, one of the main features is a new media player app that will allow gamers to watch their own video and audio files via an attached USB device, or via a connected home media server that has support for DLNA However the preview version will only support the USB drives.

Alongside that the update will allow for threaded messages, allowing players to scroll through an entire conversation, as well as new functionality for the Snap Center, which can be brought up by double tapping the Xbox button on the controller and then access things like messages, friends, parties and achievements.

However the biggest feature by far is the update to SmartGlass, allowing Xbox One oweners to stream TV to their smartphone or tablet, and even pause, play, rewind and switch channels right from the device.

Microsoft say that this feature will work with the SmartGlass app for Windows, iOS and Android, and can be configured to allow users to auto boot to live television.

There’s also a new mini guide available at the bottom of the screen, and a few more bug fixes and enhancements.
