Yota Devices has today revealed that their YotaPhone handset is now available in the UK, an announcement which comes after the company first debuted the smartphone back in 2013.
The YotaPhone is no ordinary handset, featuring a 4.3 inch LCD display on the front and a 4.3 inch e-paper display on the back, the YotaPhone manages to do something different in a market that is more or less the same, providing the user with a display that is always-on, and is able to show them notifications without using too much energy.
At the moment the YotaPhone is only available on Pay As You Go from YotaPhone’s website, but we expect it will be available elsewhere in the UK soon.
For that you not only get the two displays, but you also get a 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 1800mAh battery, and Android 4.2.2 pre-installed, oh and Yota says that it will last 7 to 10 times longer than a normal LCD-only display thanks to the use of an e-paper display.
“The typical user picks up and activates their smartphone more than 150 times a day, why? Because users worry that messages or information they need or want are hidden behind their phone’s black screen. This is a huge distraction and can impede meaningful interaction with our friends, families and colleagues.” Vlad Martynov, CEO of Yota Devices, explains in the companies press release.
At the moment the e-paper display won’t run any full Android apps, but Yota have released an SDK to help developers make more for it.
